    Internet Justice: Reconceptualizing the Legal Rights of Persons with Disabilities to Promote Equal Access in the Age of Rapid Technological Change

    Although a range of laws and regulations have been created in the United States to promote online accessibility for persons with disabilities, tremendous disparities persist in access to Internet technologies and content. Such inaccessibility is an enormous barrier to equality and participation in society for persons with disabilities. The current legal approaches to online accessibility have not proven successful, focusing on specific technologies and technical solutions to accessibility. This paper argues for a reconceptualization of the approach to promoting legal guarantees of online access for persons with disabilities, focusing on information and communication goals, the processes of accessing information, and new approaches to monitoring, guidance, and enforcement. Without a broader conception of accessibility under the law, persons with disabilities risk being increasingly excluded from the technologies and content of the Internet that are coming to define social, educational, employment, and government interactions

    All Librarianship is Political: Educate Accordingly

    After participating in a multi-year project considering the future directions for library and information science (LIS) education, the authors of this paper realized an essential aspect of the nature of libraries and librarianship was continually overlooked or sidestepped in the events and discussions. That is, libraries as institutions and many of the actions of library professionals are inherently political, yet LIS education has not traditionally prepared students for them. Confronting this aspect of LIS education and the profession in general and creating curriculum that emphasizes the politics of librarianship will better prepare students to serve their patrons, their communities, and their institutions. Such an educational approach would emphasize preparing future library professionals in areas such as leadership, education, activism and advocacy, community service and engagement, policy and law, rights and justice, and marketing and evaluation, resulting in the politically-savvy librarians ready to be activists for their institutions and communities. This paper explores the design of library education, criticism of library education, and the actual environment of contemporary librarians as the context for suggesting this significant change in the focus of library education. We live in a political world, and it’s time we prepare our students for this world

    Vitamin B6 metabolites in idiopathic calcium stone formers: no evidence for a link to hyperoxaluria

    Vitamin B6 metabolites and their potential correlates to urinary oxalate excretion in idiopathic calcium stone formers (ICSF) compared with healthy subjects were investigated. This clinical study was performed in a population of male ICSF with (Hyperoxalurics, n=55) or without hyperoxaluria (Normooxalurics, n=57) as well as in 100 healthy male control subjects. Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate serum concentration (S-pyridoxal 5'P) and 24-h urinary excretion of 4-pyridoxic acid (U-4pyridoxic acid) were measured using HPLC; 24-h urinary excretion of oxalate (U-oxalate) was measured concurrently. A subgroup of subjects (40 Hyperoxalurics, 15 Normooxalurics and 50 controls) underwent the same measurements before and after 7-day pyridoxine loading per os (pyridoxine hydrochloride, 300mg/d). Under usual conditions, U-4pyridoxic acid was similar in the three groups, whereas mean S-pyridoxal 5'P was significantly lower (p<0.0001) in the Hyperoxalurics (59.6±21.2nmol/L) and in the Normooxalurics (64.9±19.7nmol/L) than in the controls (86.0±31.0nmol/L). No correlation could be found between U-oxalate and U-4pyridoxic acid or S-pyridoxal 5'P. After B6 loading, S-pyridoxal 5'P was still significantly lower in the Hyperoxalurics (415±180nmol/L, p<0.001) and in the Normooxalurics (429±115nmol/L, p=0.036) than in the controls (546±180nmol/L), although there was no difference between groups for U-4pyridoxic acid. No correlation in any group could be found between changes in U-oxalate and changes in U-4pyridoxic acid or S-pyridoxal 5'P. Although there is no vitamin B6 deficiency in ICSF with or without hyperoxaluria, these patients, on average, have lower levels of S-pyridoxal 5'P than healthy subjects. However, this slight decrease does not seem to account for idiopathic hyperoxaluri

    Understanding Silent Failures in Medical Image Classification

    To ensure the reliable use of classification systems in medical applications, it is crucial to prevent silent failures. This can be achieved by either designing classifiers that are robust enough to avoid failures in the first place, or by detecting remaining failures using confidence scoring functions (CSFs). A predominant source of failures in image classification is distribution shifts between training data and deployment data. To understand the current state of silent failure prevention in medical imaging, we conduct the first comprehensive analysis comparing various CSFs in four biomedical tasks and a diverse range of distribution shifts. Based on the result that none of the benchmarked CSFs can reliably prevent silent failures, we conclude that a deeper understanding of the root causes of failures in the data is required. To facilitate this, we introduce SF-Visuals, an interactive analysis tool that uses latent space clustering to visualize shifts and failures. On the basis of various examples, we demonstrate how this tool can help researchers gain insight into the requirements for safe application of classification systems in the medical domain.
